Spain Gets its First World Cup Title

After more than a month of intense games, the World Cup today came to a dramatic end. After a strenuous game that lasted two overtimes, Spain won its first World Cup title defeating the Netherlands 1-0.

Spain vs. The Netherlands

Andres Iniesta secured the World Cup for Spain for the first time in their history by scoring the only goal of an enthralling final against the Netherlands four minutes from the end of extra-time on Sunday.

Just as it seemed a third World Cup final was destined to be settled by a penalty shoot-out, the Barcelona midfielder found himself in space in the Dutch box and hammered an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

It was a cruel blow for a Dutch side that had hoped to eradicate memories of the country’s defeats in the 1974 and 1978 finals…(continue)

Experts back Spain to win World Cup

The Spain and Netherlands national teams are set to face-off in the most-awaited sporting event on the planet, the 2010 World Cup Final. From octopuses to parakeets, predictions have been the norm, and pundits have sounded-off, with the Spaniards receiving some impressive backing!

Futfanatico started things off in favor of the ‘Red Fury’: “I predict that Spain will win 1-0. Both teams have very formidable midfield triangles, but I think the wing play of Iniesta and Pedro will be the difference. I can’t see Robben getting a lot of time or space against Capdevila, and Van Persie has been a non-factor in the tournament thus far.”…

Germany Arrives to Third Place

Even though they were not fighting for gold, Germany today proved that bronze is worth fighting for. Even with many of their players out to injuries, the Germans were able to rally and in the end beat the South American country.

Germany vs.Uruguay

Sami Khedira’s 82nd-minute header earned Germany a 3-2 victory in an exciting and rain-soaked 2010 World Cup Third Place play-off match.

The 23-year-old Stuttgart midfielder rose to nod the ball beyond Fernando Muslera, after Uruguay failed to clear a late corner, while Diego Forlan came inches away from a dramatic equalizer with an injury-time free-kick that struck the crossbar.

Forlan rounded off an impressive individual showing with a brilliantly taken volley to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead early in the second period, only for Marcell Jansen to restore parity moments later…(continue)
