How To Get Our Kids In Shape?

fithometeamMaking sure our children are eating properly and are getting the proper exercise is very important to me. As in my previous post Raising A Fast food Generation, obesity among Latino children is at an all time high and as parents, we need to get them back on the track of healthy living. So when I saw that two positive influential Latinos such as Laura & Jorge Posada wrote a book about family, nutrition, and health titled, “Fit Home Team: The Posada Family Guide to Health, Exercise, and Nutrition the Inexpensive and Simple Way” I decided to purchase the book to gain knowledge and insight about actions used to raise healthy children.

I have to say that this book has been written cover to cover as a testament to what is really important in the life of any family, health, happiness and family values.  Our society to date has become accustomed to making things fast and to go without taking into consideration the consequences of what we are putting into our bodies or that of our children.

As some one who grew up in a single parent household with a mother who worked long hours in a factory, fast food was not an option.  It did not matter how tired my mother was, she always provided my brother and I a home cooked meal because she knew this was the only way we would get proper nutrition.

As parents, I feel we take action to participate, teach and lead by example to create a healthy, disciplined, lifestyle for ourselves and our families. We as a community and as a people need to get healthy and it begins with us.

The Volkswagen Routan, not just another minivan

RoutanLogo highresRecently Volkswagen gave my family and I the great opportunity to drive their 2009 Routan SE down to Millville, NJ and enjoy the VW Jetta TDI Cup Series. We then decided to add another leg to our trip head down to Lancaster, PA, spend the day visiting Amish Country and at the same time get a feel for a minivan even if only for a couple of days.

During our drive in the rain through New York, New Jersey and down to Pennsylvania, my husband and I were amazed at how this minivan provided us with comfort, space and legroom.  All which came in handy when it was time to make my way to the back to comfort, feed or just keep my son company whenever he was in cranky or hunger mode.

To me, space and comfort are two very important attributes needed when driving 1. with children 2. for a long period of time and 3. for your own sanity at times.  For us driving with a nine month old didn’t pose too much of a challenge since he spent the entire trip strapped in his car seat.  For those with older children I’m sure things such as space and comfort come in handy during a short or long trip.

Routan interior high resOne thing I have to say about the Routan SE is that it is well equipped. It provided us with the convenience of  front and side air bags, alarm system, ABS (anti-lock brake), power windows on both sides, power sliding doors, triple-zone manual climate control, second-row captain chairs, underfloor storage, multiple compartments, built in sunshades, power outlets and cup holders galore among many other great benefits.

As our trip was coming to an end and we headed back to New York we realized that there was yet another important and great feature that needed to be highlighted about this vehicle which was that it was pretty good on gas. We spent two full days driving through three states and spent a fair share of time stuck in traffic and somehow managed to do it all on one tank of gas.

I simply thought the bigger car the more fuel it will go through.

Apparently, I was mistaken.

Their tag line states, “The people want a minivan that drives like a Volkswagen” and believe folks will get just that. In my opinion, the VW Routan is a solid choice for a family of any size looking for a great, reliable, powerful and stylish vehicle.

Disclosure: I wrote about this vehicle simply because my family and I had a great time driving it and wanted to share our experience. The VW Routan SE was a loaner and I received no compensation or benefits from Volkswagen or any of their partners.

PBS Makes Learning Fun Again with Sid the Science

sidAs someone who grew up in the 80’s, watched and loved a variety of educational shows on PBS (Mister Rogers Neighborhood, The Electric Company, Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street and 3-2-1-Contact rounding out my top 5). I jumped at the chance to get an opportunity to watch one of their newer series from The Jim Henson Company; “Sid the Science Kid

“Sid The Science Kid” is this new educational series using different ways encourage exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. The show uses an in-school setting, a child’s natural curiosity, music and humor to get kids interested and involved in a science curriculum.

Joining Sid are his friends on his scientific adventures at home and school are May, Gerald and Gabriela; his teacher Susie; Philbert his dog; Grandma; Mom; Dad and Zeke, Sid’s baby brother.

Whether it’s how rain clouds form or why a banana gets mushy, this program allows parents to create a dialogue with children, motivate them to learn and create confidence within themselves as they find out that science is meaningful and relevant to everyday life.

I truly believe this show is phenomenal; it has been designed to support learning by showing children that there is science all around us and teaching them that there is a reason for why things happen.

Amish Experience

My husband and I (and 9 month old) are a road trip family; we love to hop in the car and experience life outside of the concrete jungle that is New York City.

After going down to North Carolina a few months back we decided to keep things a bit closer to home and decided Amish Country in Lancaster, PA would be next on our places to visit list. So with that we packed up for the night and began our two plus hour ride down.

DSCN0157The first hour of driving was uneventful, nothing but highway and trees as we make it through NJ Turnpike. Then, as the second hour of driving neared, my husband and I realized we were no longer in the big city and had officially entered Lancaster, PA, this as we drove and saw nothing but farmland and cattle. Immediately getting this quiet, quaintscenic view of Dutch Country as we passed endless cornfields, signs of homemade food DSCN0622nearby and buggies filled with Amish families making their way along the road. As we make our way to the hotel located in the downtown area of Lancaster, we see how things are different; there were shopping centers, and most importantly people.

DSCN0597The following day we head out to get some good old fashion Amish grub.  We stopped by at the Plain & Simple farm in Birds-in-Hand, PA (yea, I’ve never heard of this town either) for what we thought would be brunch. We head into the restaurant to find that we had two options to order from. The first option was a smorgasbord of food that included appetizers, main course, and dessert or the second which was simply off the menu. We opted for the second choice as we saw what was on some of the other tables and knew we would’ve been there for a few days if we attempted the feat. We decided on the fried chicken, mashed potato, dried sweet corn, and coleslaw.  We felt like dinner had just been served and it was only 11:30 in the morning, soon after the feast, we decided on a buggy tour followed by the Amish House Tour.

homemadeWhile taking these tours we were provided with information about their remarkable history, from the religious prosecution of 16th century Europe to the establishment of life in the New World. Very few people know much about the Amish, their lifestyle and what is most important to them their time-honored values and traditions.

DSCN0626

Our buggy driver who was no more than eighteen wearing jeans, boots and a long sleeved shirt shared with us a little bit of his life.  He informed us of his strained relationship with his family due his decision to no longer be Amish.  The decision was made based on his desire to continue his education and have a career, something that is not allowed as Amish children only attend school until the eighth grade.

The Amish House Tour gave us a behind the scenes look at the Amish way of life, from their farm life, their one-room schools where all Amish children ages 6-13 are taught and even to their living room, showing us first-hand how this tight knit community live their lives.

I have to say that I was intrigued to actually see Amish people. Watching people who keep and to a certain extent distance themselves from the rest of the world is what has sparked our curiosity to learn more about them. Like many, I’ve only heard about their lifestyle but could never imagine seeing people in this country living with out something that the rest of us have become so incredibly dependent on as is electricity.

DSCN0676After visiting Amish Country and getting a feel for their simplistic lifestyle, their strong work ethic, devotion to family and community. It DSCN0589made me wonder, with our society’s interest in restoring family values, would it be that off the wall to learn a few things from the Amish way of life?

Going Green with Volkswagen – A Day at the Racetrack

DSCN0203This past Saturday, September 12th, Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ hosted the Jetta TDI Cup Series.  This race offers the opportunity to young, up and coming drivers (ages 16-26) a chance to compete in ten events on eight courses around North America (Virginia, Utah, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Canada, New Jersey, Georgia). This series offers each competing driver the opportunity to earn a Pro Racing license from the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and at the end of the season, the series champion win $100,000.

Being the first to introduce clean diesel technology on the race track, Volkswagen also announced it will be using B5 biodiesel to power its race cars and transport vehicles and generators during the 2009 Jetta TDI series.  These vehicles are so efficient that during the 2009 season, the Jetta TDI Cup cars will only consume approximately two tanks of B5 biodiesel during the race reducing carbon emission by over 2,500 pounds as a result of the new fuel, making this racing series green from beginning to end.

Along with its success on the racetrack, off the course Volkswagen has taken the necessary steps to become the leader in providing diesel powered vehicles right here in the United States by developing a clean diesel technology present in both the Touareg TDI and Jetta TDI.

DSCN0239Volkswagen has taken drastic steps to make environmentally friendly vehicles and supporting organizations such as Carbonfund.org making a concerted effort to reduce the carbon footprint through reforestation efforts.

Our current environmental state calls for action and it begins with us. So why not make that conscience effort to use less and conserve more.

What to look for in a Pediatrician

pediatrician1Finding a good, reliable pediatrician is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. Making sure we find someone that we can trust and rely on to ensure that our children’s best interests are their main priority often becomes a daunting task.

Below are some questions parent’s-to-be or parents looking to switch should consider asking a potential pediatrician:

1. What is your philosophy on vaccinations and antibiotics with common viruses?

2. Is there a separate well and sick waiting area?

3. Do you have weekend, evening and holiday hours?

4. Ask about their credentials

5. Do parents have 24 hour access to a doctor?

6. Ask about their insurance coverage and if there are any cancellation fees

7. How soon after birth will the baby be seen?

One thing to keep in mind is not to feel strange about asking too many questions. A good doctor addresses all of your concerns and listens to all of your questions.

The Good Wife

THE GOOD WIFEPremiering Tuesday, September 22nd, on CBS, the Good Wife is a legal drama starring Julianna Margulies and Chris Noth. The storyline focuses on Marguiles as Alicia Florrick, the wife of a politician, Peter Florrick (Noth).

After her husband is jailed following a very public sex and corruption scandal, she must pick up the pieces assuming full responsibility for her family and re-entering the workforce to provide for her two children.

I found this show to be like no other. I was very much entertained and was eager to see what came next. The Good Wife

The series focuses on the other side of the coin, the side where the family is left to pick up the pieces and make it through such tough times. The drama also centers in on the effect left behind by a corrupt politician on those trying to do the right thing.

In my opinion, this show is a must watch. I believe the show will do really well alongside the stellar lineup of great shows CBS has this coming season.
